'The Secret Circle' recap: What's Your Damage, Heather?
Cassie and Faye learn the true reason behind Heather's unique condition. It involves snakes.

Oh dear. Things aren't looking good for sweet Melissa right now, are they? This week's installment of The Secret Circle dove right into the cliffhanger mystery we were left with at the end of last week -- what did Amelia do to Heather the night of the infamously fatal fire? Well, we were given our answer (sort of), but the members of the Circle are still as lost and confused as ever. More than anything, this week's episode dealt with the hellish emotional aftermath of the painful event that took out most of their parents. Yes, we also had a Cassie/Faye Hardy Boys style mystery, and a new demonic plot to boot. But when you get down to the nuts and bolts of it, these kids are nothing but a group of sad quasi-orphans trying to fill some sort of emotional void, be it with sex or magic or some good old-fashioned mystery-solvin'. The CW's Vampire Diaries was down a tenth to a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating, and The Secret Circle was off two-tenths to a 0.8 adults 18-49 rating.

Now that The Secret Circle's coven has forged a semi-united front, the group's members will face new challenges as they struggle to understand their powers and whether to use them for good or evil, all while Cassie (Britt Robertson) tries to uncover the mysteries of their parents' coven.Meet The Secret Circle's Secret Coven
In last week's episode, Cassie learned that her mother may not have been an innocent witch, as an old friend of her mother's revealed that Amelia Blake had done something far worse than kill their former best friend, Heather (Camille Sullivan). In locating Heather, the CW series will take a seriously dark turn that will include at least one death. (Watch the trailer.)

The Secret Circle Gets Scary
During a visit to the set, the cast discuss the darker turn the series is taking, beginning with this week's episode.The Secret Circle only began airing in the past month, but during a visit to the set of the witchcraft-powered CW series this week, Thomas Dekker ("Adam") said he felt this this week's new episode, "Heather," was a pivotal one.
While the core characters and their relationships are now established, the cast members myself and a group of fellow journalists spoke to -- travel and accommodations to the Vancouver set were paid for by Warner Bros -- stressed that little will stay stagnant. As Shelley Hennig ("Diana") put it, "I don't think any character ever stays the same. Things are going to happen. Diana is going to have to question where she stands in the Circle and in her relationships and I think every character does that at some point. You will definitely see more levels of Diana. She's not type A throughout the entire season. She's going to go through some things and it's a lot of fun playing her."

As Dekker explained, "Not only is it when I think the show really finds its footing and what it is, it also is the episode where we tip off into the dark side. I keep saying the show gets darker and darker and heavier and more frightening, and this is the episode where that really begins. And the ones that follow... Yeah, it's a dark show! We were joking today that we're probably going to be in trouble with quite a lot of parents."

"A lot has been happening to the Circle," Hennig tells us about what is going on in the episode they are filming. "They've been in a lot of danger, so being [at this location] makes them feel like 'Okay. We're kind of away from where all the bad stuff has been happening. Diana's really pleased with this. We decide to spend the night, and Faye gets the alcohol out from the liquor cabinet, and it's just a bunch of us playing Truth or Dare in the living room, trying to enjoy ourselves and get our mind off of witchcraft and everything that's been going wrong," she says. Does this imply the Circle is more solid by the time we get to Episode 8? "They have their ups and downs. They're still learning to get along, which really stresses Diana out. But yeah. I'd say some relationships have gotten stronger and some have gotten weaker. It's just gotten more complicated, with triangles and squares," she says.

The Secret Circle may have bound their witchy group, but make no mistake, the power struggle continues in this Thursday’s episode (The CW, 9/8c).When Cassie finds out that a friend of her mother’s has been in a catatonic state since the fire that killed half of the circle’s parents, she sets out to make things right — and in doing so gets a little more than she bargained for. Turns out Mom’s friend, Heather, is possessed, and that leads to a “really dark” and “scary” hour, according to the show’s star.
“It’s got a different feel than previous episodes,” Britt Robertson, who plays Cassie, previewed during a Vancouver set visit arranged by Warner Bros. TV. “It’s a mystery, and it shows you a different side of witchcraft than you’ve seen before.”

Secret Circle: 6 Burning Questions Answered
Two weeks into its run, The CW’s The Secret Circle (Thursdays at 9/8c) has shed light on a few dark matters — for example, how Cassie, Adam et al needed to “bind” the circle (lest any one of them run amok with power and/or fatally lob a kindly classmate onto some rocks). Gale Harold gets wicked in 'The Secret Circle'
Gale Harold is no stranger to playing bad boys. His sexy Brian Kinney in "Queer as Folk" was the resident love-'em-and-leave-'em heartbreaker for five seasons.But Charles Meade, the wicked witch of Chance Harbor he plays in CW's "The Secret Circle," is on a totally different level.
“He may be up in the bad scale a bit,” Harold said Monday during a phone interview prior to the show’s third episode, “Loner,” airing at 8 p.m. Sept. 29.

Oh noes! On this week’s episode of The Secret Circle, creepy fisherman Zachary Larson stalks our Circle gang to redress a past mistake. Melissa’s shares her feelings with playboy Nick, Adam admits his attraction to Cassie and Charles and Dawn do some major “clean up” to keep their past hush-hush.

Cassie Blake was a happy, normal teenage girl - until her mother Amelia dies in what appears to be a tragic accidental fire. Orphaned and deeply saddened, Cassie moves in with her warm and loving grandmother Jane in the beautiful small town of Chance Harbor, Washington - the town her mother left so many years before - where the residents seem to know more about Cassie than she does about herself. As Cassie gets to know her high school classmates, including sweet-natured Diana and her handsome boyfriend Adam, brooding loner Nick, mean-girl Faye and her sidekick Melissa, strange and frightening things begin to happen. When her new friends explain that they are all descended from powerful witches, and they've been waiting for Cassie to join them and complete a new generation of the Secret Circle, Cassie refuses to believe them - until Adam shows her how to unlock her incredible magical powers. But it's not until Cassie discovers a message from her mother in an old leather-bound book of spells hidden in her mother's childhood bedroom, that she understands her true and dangerous destiny. What Cassie and the others don't yet know is that darker powers are at play, powers that might be linked to the adults in the town, including Diana's father and Faye's mother - and that Cassie's mother's death might not have been an accident.
